A properly installed retractable awning can help protect your home from high winds & dirt.

Sunesta awnings can protect your home and can easily be cleaned after a red dirt storm.

Sunesta Awnings protect buildings against red stains from Oklahoma’s red dirt that comes from oxidation, water, & compression.

If you live in Oklahoma then you, along with all the other residents, know how much of a pain Oklahoma’s red dirt wind is. Not just for the fact that it’s literally dirt blowing in your face, but also because it seems to stain everything it touches–making your once white house, PINK! We don’t particularly have anything against people who have pink houses–as long as that decision was purposeful. However, for those of you who are sick and tired of Oklahoma’s red dirt winds staining your home or business, we have a solution for you. Here at Rain Guard we specialize in guttering systems, but we also specialize in Sunesta awning installations. Keep reading to find out what Oklahoma’s red dirt winds are, how to protect your home or business from OKC’s red dirt, and how to clean red dirt stains off of your protective awning.

Oklahoma’s Red Dirt

If you’re an Oklahoman native (or just really knowledgeable about different dirt types), then you most likely have experienced Oklahoma’s red dirt, sometimes referred to as red clay, first hand. Its red color comes from a high percentage of iron that oxidizes from water or air, breaking it down with the help of heat, natural compression, and weatherization. Not all of Oklahoma’s terrain contains red dirt because all soil types act differently when faced with certain temperatures, moisture levels, and other factors that we typically don’t even think about affecting soil. With that being said, Oklahoma’s red dirt is a foundation problem, nothing you are putting in your yard or not putting in your yard. Don’t be discouraged, though. There is hope in protecting your home or business from the red dirt wind stains that come with living in an Oklahoma area that is abundant in red dirt.

How to Clean Red Dirt Stains off your Awning

Depending on the condition, the amount of time it will take to clean your awning will vary. Red stains tend to be a little more tricky to get out the first try, but keep reading to learn the secret of making your retractable awning look good as new.

1. Remove the Debris

If your retractable awning is closed, open it before removing the debris to ensure you get all the excess dirt or leaves off.

2. Make or Buy a Cleaning Solution

Depending on the type of fabric that your retractable awning is made of will determine what kind of cleaner you use. *READ THE AWNING MANUAL BEFORE PUTTING CLEANER ON*

3. Scrub your Awning

Use the type of cleaner recommended for your specific awning, or mild liquid soap that’s cold to lukewarm. Completely wet your awning with the cleaner, then gently scrub the awning with a soft bristled brush. Gently scrub out the dirt and stains on the top and bottom of the awning.

4. Rinse Awning off with a Hose

Rinse the cleaner off of the awning with a hose as needed. Repeat these steps until you are satisfied. Do not retract your awning until you are sure that it is completely dry.
