- With winter being a bad time to be a gutter system, spring gutter cleaning is essential.
- Winter weather makes it so that a lot of debris makes its way into your gutter system.
- Cleaning your own gutters is possible, but it’s safer and easier to have an expert at Rain Guard do it for you!
Between snow, sickness, and holiday stress, winter is a rough month for everyone. Gutters are no exception! The harsh weather can cause a build up of debris in your gutters, and as the snow begins to melt, clogs will start to form. Let us teach you why and how you should do some spring gutter cleaning!
How Often Should You Clean Gutters?
It is recommended that you clean your gutters every four months or at least twice a year. One cleaning in the fall and one in the spring may be enough for you depending on how much debris finds its way into your gutters. The exact frequency in which you’ll need to clean your gutters can also be affected by harsh wind, rain, or snow as these can lead to more debris and clogging. We recommend spring gutter cleaning as part of your annual spring cleaning reset.
Benefits Of Cleaning Gutters Regularly
Gutters are an overlooked feature of the home. Gutters tunnel water away from your house and foundation. Excess water on the home and foundation can lead to a variety of issues. Neglected gutters will lead to staining on the side of the house, damage to landscaping, and can even lead to pests nesting in your gutters! Whether it’s fall gutter cleaning, spring gutter cleaning, or summer gutter cleaning, clean gutters will benefit you year-round.
Why Is Spring The Best Time For Gutter Cleaning?
Spring gutter cleaning will be much easier than fully replacing them later on! Not only is spring a time when it is necessary to clean out your gutters, but the pleasant spring weather keeps you from working outside in the scorching sun! Spring is the best time for gutter cleaning for numerous reasons that we discuss below.
Perfect Time To Remove Post Winter Debris
The winter is a harsh month for gutters. A lot of debris will collect in your gutters, and as the snow begins to melt away, signs of clogging will start to show. Before you know it, your gutters will start to sag and crack. It’s important that you clean your gutters before it’s too late!
Pest Prevention
Clogged gutters can lead to pests of all kinds getting comfortable in your gutters. Mosquitos, mice, and rats are more than happy to build nests in your gutters. This not only looks gross, but poses health issues. Keeping gutters free of debris will keep these animals from posting up in your gutters.
Easier Access/Nice Weather
Spring is arguably the best time to be outside in general. The smell of flowers blows through the air and the sun is shining, and it’s not too hot. Take advantage of the pleasant weather while you can, and get outdoors. There’s no better time to reset gutters than with spring gutter cleaning.
Spring Gutter Cleaning DIY
If you are interested in cleaning your own gutters, we have instructions below that will help!
1. Safety Tools
To clean your gutters you will need quite a few tools. You will need safety gear such as safety goggles, protective gloves, and non-slip shoes. For the actual cleaning process you will need a ladder, gutter scoop, a bucket, and a garden hose.
2. Remove Debris
Once your safety gear is on and your ladder is ready to go, it’s time to carefully climb the ladder and begin removing debris. Use your gloved hands and/or your gutter scoop to remove your debris and load it into the bucket.
3. Flush Gutters
Use your hose to flush out all small debris and ensure that water is running freely throughout the entire gutter system. Be sure to check for any signs of water pooling as this is a sign of damage.
4. Inspect Gutter System
Both while you are flushing your gutters and after your gutters have been flushed, be sure to check for signs of damage. Check for cracks, holes, or rust. Large holes or signs of miss-shaping can mean that your gutters need to be replaced.
5. Make Repairs As Necessary
Small holes and cracks can be repaired with special, non-water based, glues and sealants. If the holes are large or plentiful, you will have to get your gutters replaced. Warping and sagging can also pose a reason to get your gutters replaced.
